Day 2329 of the 7 day Bible verse challenge.
Proverbs 12:15 NIV
"Men need a long life to know that they ain't right." That's a line from Survival by NEEDTOBREATHE, and boy they nailed it! You remember when you were a kid and thought that you knew absolutely everything? Nobody could tell you anything. Nobody could offer you advice. Nobody had anything that you needed because you had a complete understanding of life and how everything worked. That youthful arrogance is something that we all go through, but sometimes it sticks with us as we get older. And we need to lose it!
Its's fun to think that we have everything under control. It's comfortable to think that we know everything. It's a great boost to the ego thinking that we're the ones in control and that we're never wrong, that we never make mistakes. But thinking something doesn't make it true does it? We're really good at convincing ourselves that we are better, stronger, smarter, and tougher than we really are. And it can be next to impossible to break through all of that prideful thinking. But if we actually just want to be better then that's exactly what we need to do.
Before we find Christ we think we've got it all figured out. We get to make our own choices. We get to choose our own path. We're the captains of this ship and we can sail it wherever our hearts desire. We've talked about that a whole lot recently. Following our sin-prone minds anywhere is just a horrible decision. By now I'm sure that most of us realize that. We've lived a life where we called the shots and we've got plenty of scars and regrets to prove it. It's in following our selfish paths that we discover that maybe it's just not all we hoped it would be. Maybe there's a better way.
Maybe we don't actually know everything. Maybe doing wrong and trying to convince ourselves that it's right is a waste of time. Maybe our being willing to humbly listen to advice and stop thinking that we've got it figured out is the only way to actually improve. Look, it's okay to make mistakes. We all have. But the problem lies in continuing to follow those poor choices in the hope that things turn around and we end up being right. That's just not going to happen! Our arrogance will drastically hinder our ability to advance beyond the lies that tell us that we don't have any flaws or problems to address.
It takes a lot of time and errors to finally realize that we don't know half of what we think we know. But coming to that place where we finally accept that we need help is a good thing! Understanding that we need someone bigger, stronger, and way smarter to show us the right path to take is the only way to find a life of peace, a life that actually leads somewhere worth going. I know we like to believe otherwise, but foolishly following our deceitful hearts won't lead us where we truly want to be. Only humbling ourselves to following Christ can get us there. But thankfully, He's merciful enough to welcome us back and lead us to something better!
