Day 2413 of the 7 day Bible verse challenge.
Jeremiah 16:17 NIV
What must God think? That’s a question that pops in my mind every now and then. What must He think when we sees the things going on down here? What must He feel when we choose to hate or harm someone else? What must He think when our society takes one more step away from Him and His ways? How saddening, frustrating, and disappointing is it to Him when He sees darkness win more days than love and kindness?
It’s too convenient to think that we can hide things. Nobody can see our thoughts so they’re relatively harmless, right? If we say something under our breath then most likely nobody heard it. If we do something with no one around then it’s a secret that no one could possibly know. Those are all some pretty dangerous deceptions. God knows. He hears our thoughts. He feels our words. He sees every action, every choice we make. There is no hiding and I think that’s something we need to keep in mind.
Rather than trying to get away with something or hide what we’re doing, maybe we should ask ourselves a simple question. If Jesus were standing right beside you, would you do or say whatever it is in front of Him? If we feel the need to hide it, disguise it, keep it quiet, or do it when nobody sees then why are doing it? Doesn’t the need to hide something show that maybe we’re not proud of it? If it’s something that we don’t want anyone else to see or hear then maybe we just shouldn’t be doing or saying it!
I think it’s about time that we stop taking our choices and actions so lightly. It’s time that we get rid of this idea that we can hide what we think or disguise what we say. We can’t. And thinking that we can only gives us this sense of freedom to do as we wish. It leads us to believe that nothing we do or say really matters. We simply can’t afford to fall into that kind of thinking. Everything we say and do does matter. Even if it doesn’t impact anyone else around us, it can still hurt God and pull us away from Him.
We have to stop foolishly trying to hide what we do and simply work to do better instead. Doing something wrong and telling ourselves that nobody else knows about it only opens us up to the idea that we can get by with it. That may fly while we’re here, but when we’re standing before God then we won’t be able to escape the truth of this verse. That He does see everything we do, hear everything we say, and know every sin that we’ve committed against Him.
There’s no debating that we’re already more than far enough away from God. Our world relishes this idea that nothing really matters, there is no big difference between right and wrong, and that truth is subjective to the desires of each individual person. But if we really want to be good people who live for Christ and shine His light in this place then we have to start living like it regardless of who can see and who can’t. We have to choose to do the right thing at all times in every circumstance because we understand that it all matters to God.
The bottom line is that there is no hiding. He sees it all. He hears it all. So before you do or say anything, ask yourself what God would think. Would it make Him smile or cause Him to hang His head in disappointment? Will it help someone if they happen to hear it or will it cause even more damage that we simply don’t need? Will it push us closer to Jesus or pull us further away? We don’t have time to play around and act like nothing matters. It all matters because He knows every bit of it!
